Case Study: Modernizing a FinTech Commercial Loan Management Platform

Introduction

A leading FinTech company, specializing in innovative software for the secondary loan markets, enables its customers—including investment banks, hedge funds, and government-sponsored banks—to efficiently finance, buy, sell, and manage residential whole loans. With their market-tested products refined since 2003, they faced the need to modernize their legacy hosting infrastructure. In 2018, Microsoft referred Seepath to assist this valued customer in migrating and transforming their data center operations to Microsoft Azure.

Challenge

The client's existing setup involved hosting their web and SQL server applications in third-party data centers located in New York, with disaster recovery (DR) facilities in Virginia. This presented several challenges:

  • Legacy Infrastructure: The existing hosting was becoming outdated, potentially impacting performance, scalability, and the ability to innovate rapidly.

  • Cost Inefficiencies: Managing physical data centers or third-party hosting can lead to higher operational costs compared to cloud solutions.

  • Limited Agility: Traditional infrastructure often lacks the flexibility and rapid provisioning capabilities of cloud platforms.

  • Modernization Imperative: A clear need to transition to more modern, cloud-native services to improve efficiency and service delivery.

Solution

Seepath conducted a thorough Azure migration assessment and proposed a phased approach to migrate and modernize their environment:

  • Phase 1: Azure Migration (Lift and Shift): Successfully migrated their existing servers from the third-party data centers to Microsoft Azure. Established Azure US East as the primary region and Azure West US for robust disaster recovery, ensuring business continuity.

  • Phase 2: Application Modernization: Modernized their applications by transitioning them to Azure App Service for web hosting and Azure SQL Database for their database needs. Implemented Azure Application Gateway to optimize traffic management, enhance security, and improve load balancing.

  • Phase 3: AI Infusion and Multi-Tenancy: Leveraged Microsoft Copilot and AI services to infuse intelligence into their applications, unlocking new capabilities and insights. Developed multi-tenant application architectures to efficiently and securely serve major Fortune 100 clients, including Deutsche Bank, Nomura Securities, and Citibank.

Results

The multi-phased migration and modernization project delivered significant benefits:

  • Reduced Hosting Costs: Transitioning to Azure PaaS services like App Service and SQL Azure significantly lowered infrastructure and operational expenses.

  • Improved Latency and Performance: Azure's global infrastructure and optimized services led to better application responsiveness and user experience.

  • Enhanced Scalability and Agility: The Azure platform provided the ability to scale resources on demand and deploy new features more rapidly.

  • Strengthened Security: Utilized Azure's advanced security features and services like Application Gateway to protect sensitive financial data.

  • Future-Ready Platform: Infusion of AI and development of a multi-tenant architecture positioned the client for continued growth and innovation, enabling them to better serve their high-profile enterprise customers.

Conclusion

Seepath's strategic, phased approach not only successfully migrated the FinTech leader's critical infrastructure to Azure but also transformed their applications into a modern, cost-effective, and intelligent platform. This modernization has enabled them to enhance service delivery, reduce operational overhead, and effectively cater to the demanding needs of their Fortune 100 clientele.

Case Study: Backup & Disaster Recovery for a Leading Credit Union

Introduction

In 2018, a leading national credit union faced an urgent need for a robust Disaster Recovery (DR) solution, compelled by evolving compliance requirements. Their existing DR strategy, reliant on an on-premise tape backup solution, was proving inadequate and failed to meet their critical Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPO).

Challenge

The credit union's infrastructure, comprising over 100 on-premise servers virtualized using VMware, lacked real-time DR protection. Key challenges included:

  • Compliance Gaps: The existing tape-based solution did not satisfy stringent regulatory compliance mandates for data recovery and business continuity.

  • Unacceptable RTO/RPO: Tape backups resulted in RTO and RPO measured in days, posing a significant risk to operations in the event of a disaster.

  • Lack of Real-time Protection: The large VMware estate was vulnerable due to the absence of continuous data replication and rapid failover capabilities.

  • Operational Inefficiencies: Manual tape management was cumbersome and not scalable for their needs.

Solution

Following a thorough Azure assessment, Seepath designed and implemented a comprehensive DR solution leveraging Microsoft Azure services:

  • Azure Site Recovery (ASR): Deployed ASR to enable replication of the on-premise VMware virtual machines to Azure, providing automated failover capabilities.

  • Azure Backup Server (MABS): Implemented Azure Backup Server to facilitate efficient and secure backup of on-premise workloads to Azure, offering flexible recovery options.

  • Optimized RTO/RPO: The solution was architected to significantly reduce RTO and RPO from days down to minutes.

  • Ongoing Managed Services: Seepath provides ongoing management and monitoring of the DR environment to ensure its readiness and effectiveness.

Results

The Azure-based DR solution delivered transformative outcomes for the credit union:

  • Dramatically Improved RTO/RPO: Achieved RTO/RPO objectives in minutes, significantly enhancing business resilience and minimizing potential downtime.

  • Compliance Adherence: The new solution successfully met all regulatory compliance requirements for disaster recovery and data protection.

  • Enhanced Data Security: Robust replication and backup to Azure ensured critical data was protected and readily recoverable.

  • Increased Operational Efficiency: Automation of DR processes reduced manual effort and improved overall DR posture.

  • Continued Reliability: The solution is currently managed by Seepath, ensuring ongoing optimal performance and support.

Conclusion

Seepath's expertise in Azure enabled the leading national credit union to transition from an outdated and inadequate tape backup system to a modern, resilient, and compliant disaster recovery solution. By leveraging Azure Site Recovery and Azure Backup Server, the credit union significantly improved its RTO/RPO, secured its critical VMware environment, and ensured business continuity, all while being expertly managed by Seepath.
